Hytiva® Uses Custom Telematics Hardware to Take Cannabis Logistics to New Heights

The distribution and consumer delivery of cannabis products is not an area often highlighted in the cannabis industry, or known as a source of innovation in the field. Hytiva® has been innovating in cannabis logistics since its beginning in 2014, launching consumer delivery technology and custom distribution vans, built with refrigeration to FDA requirements, panic buttons, 360-degree camera systems, and remote monitoring during deliveries. Hytiva has raised the bar once again by building custom, in-vehicle telematics devices, for deployment in its cars, vans, and even taken to the air with planes.

Daniel Gozick, CTO of Hytiva®, remarked:

It may seem unusual that a cannabis company is building custom hardware, but the cannabis industry is challenged in ways that require greater operational efficiency to offset problems that other industries simply do not have. With financial constraints like 280E, or the time and money spent on compliance, our expertise in software and hardware allows us to help our clients and our companies reduce effort, optimize costs, and increase accuracy, while gathering more insights than any other methods. These telematics devices are simply a continuation of that, and our most advanced effort yet.

The Technology

Using the OBDII data ports and data bus systems on different types of vehicles, Hytiva is able to read data from the vehicle’s sensors and computer about fuel levels, air bag deployment, maintenance warnings, acceleration, and a myriad of other data in real-time. This data is combined with other sensors and functionality built into the hardware, such as GPS, Wifi, Cellular connectivity, storage, camera connectivity, and more.

Realtime logistics data is incredibly valuable for increasing efficiency, safety, and reducing costs daily. Scenarios such as improving driver safety with dispatch alerts when an accident occurs, lower maintenance costs with immediate maintenance notifications, detailed fuel mileage tracking, and better cannabis compliance with less staff time required are just a few examples.

Usually, this data can only be acquired using third party services that do not provide the level of security, information, or functionality required to really put this technology to use at the level Hytiva needed. With the expertise to accomplish this task already available to its team, Hytiva Technologies took on the challenge.

USA Made and Secured with Anti-Interdiction

Hytiva Technologies’ commitment to security and privacy goes beyond the applications it builds. This required building its hardware at home in the U.S., with a highly controlled supply chain and individual components sourced directly from U.S. manufacturers with U.S. fabrication, then from trusted countries with verifiable circuits and secure/open manufacturing practices. At assembly, each device is further secured by anti-interdiction markings and seals, meant to make tampering evident during shipment and after install. Anti-interdiction describes practices intended to prevent the interception or tampering with a commodity during shipping or movement. These practices are invaluable for devices deployed in the field, such as telematics devices, where they are exposed and moving every day.

The most common security threats include third-party staff who have access to your information. Even third party access intended for protection can be the source that compromises any system. Telematics is no different. Hytiva Technologies designed the hardware to connect directly to its servers, using no third party data services, for full control of the data and greater safety from this class of threats for Hytiva and its clients.

Tom Clarke, CEO of Hytiva®, commented:

Preventative maintenance and attention to detailed intelligence is paramount. We look to prevent things before they happen when possible, with multiple layers of contingency plans and practices that improve security while adding value. We brought this mindset to the international end of prohibition movement that cannabis is going through, for the safety and security of our staff and the benefit of the entire cannabis industry.
