Taken Off the Prohibition List: Companies Team Up for Athletic CBD Research
Former pro athletes partner with Phivida on cannabinoid education & research.
PHILADELPHIA, March 22, 2018 - Phivida Holdings Inc., a premium brand of cannabidiol (CBD) foods, drinks, and products, announced the signing of a Letter of Intent with the non-profit organization Athletes for Care, Inc. They plan to partner in research and education regarding the use of CBD in amateur and professional athletic medicines and therapies.
The partnership comes after the World of Anti-Doping Agencies (WADA) officially removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances on January 1, 2018. This opens up multiple possibilities for competitive athletes, allowing them to try CBD in place of opiates for pain management or inflammation without suffering the consequences of an anticipated drug test.
"It's CBD," Nate Diaz, a UFC fighter explained to the media his vape pen usage last year after a loss to Conor McGregor, "It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It'll make your life a better place."
While CBD is now accepted in the world of professional and amateur athletics, THC remains banned. This is why Athletes for Care, a company founded by former pro athletes (from the NFL, NHL, NBA, UFC, and NCAA) advocating research and education in sports medicine, chose Phivida to partner with. Their products are completely THC-free, and their CBD is processed from hemp rather than the cannabis plants found in dispensaries.
One of the goals that Phivida and Athletes for Care will tackle together is finding opiate-replacement therapies using CBD. They'll also be researching ways CBD can enhance athletic performance, reduce pain and inflammation from sports-related injuries, and improve post-competition recovery.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a condition found in 99% of deceased former NFL players that involves chronic pain and inflammation (according to a neuropathology study published by the New York Times), may also be treatable with CBD for athletes currently suffering from it.
The partner companies will also take a closer look at whether CBD can be used to prevent concussion-related disorders and diseases. Phivida's products containing cannabinoids have shown potential for the preservation of neuronal structure and function, and this will be applied to their newfound research goals.
