History of Langley Speedway

Langley Speedway opened in 1950 as a dirt track before being paved in 1968. The speedway quickly became a prominent venue for stock car racing, hosting NASCAR’s top divisions throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Notably, the NASCAR Cup Series ran at Langley from 1964 to 1970, with legendary drivers like Richard Petty, David Pearson, and Bobby Allison securing victories on its demanding surface.

Following the departure of NASCAR’s premier division, Langley solidified itself as a key track for regional racing, serving as a launchpad for future NASCAR stars. Langley Speedway is a 0.395-mile asphalt oval with a width of 55 feet and progressive banking ranging from 6 degrees in the turns to 2 degrees in the straightaways. The track’s layout encourages close-quarters racing, emphasizing driver skill and strategy over raw horsepower. Due to its size and design, Langley is often compared to Martinsville Speedway, another Virginia short track known for its tight racing and bumper-to-bumper action.

The facility features a frontstretch grandstand that provides excellent sightlines for fans, as well as a well-maintained pit area for competitors. Unlike larger super speedways, Langley Speedway offers an up-close and personal racing experience, making it a fan favorite among short track enthusiasts.

Notable Race Events

Langley offers a diverse array of track events catering to various racing enthusiasts. The NASCAR-sanctioned facility features 12 divisions that rotate during their Saturday night programs, including Late Models, Modifieds, Virginia Racers, Legends Cars, Super Streets, Enduros, Grand Stocks, Super Trucks, UCARS, Pro Six, and HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts.

Beyond traditional racing, the speedway hosts unique events such as "Wacky Wednesdays," where individuals with a helmet and street-legal car can participate in time attacks, burnout competitions, and one-on-one drag races. The Langley Drift Club brings drifting excitement to the track, while the Hampton Roads Kart Club organizes kart races on most Sundays and some Fridays throughout the season. Additionally, the "Day of Destruction" events provide thrilling demolition-style competitions, with the next one scheduled for March 15, 2025.
